Norway Supports Mapping of Seismic Activity in Myanmar

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale and 10 km depth struck close to he Thai border in Myanmar on 24th March. There are reports of a number of casualties and material damages.


Norway is financing a project, implemented by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) in Bangkok, aimed at mapping the risk of earthquakes in Myanmar. The initiative for this mapping project was taken by professor Kuvet Atakan at the University of Bergen, Norway. It falls under the framework agreement between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ADPC on emergency preparedness initiatives in Asia.
