Vietnam Rescues Grounded Danish Ship

A Danish container ship that had been grounded in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau near Ho Chi Minh City for three days was rescued Friday morning.

The 115,000-ton Grete Maersk was towed away by seven tugboats operated by officers of the Vietnam Marine Administration and provincial port authority.

The ship put itself to sea after the rescue to run safety tests before heading for the SP-PSA Port in the beach city of Vung Tau.

On Tuesday, the Grete Maersk was on its way from Malaysia to the port on Thi Vai River when the captain turned the wheel abruptly to avoid collision with a fishing boat.

Due to strong winds, the 367-meter long vessel ran into a coastal sand bank and was grounded.

Grete Maersk is one of the largest ships to have docked at Ba Ria-Vung Tau ports, newswire VnExpress reported.
