On Tuesday 15 June signed Sweden and Laos a new agreement on continued development cooperation covering the period July 2004 December 2006.
Sweden’s new package for Laos is based on a Government decision of 15 April 2004 on a new Swedish country strategy for development cooperation with Laos PDR.
The overall objectives of Swedish development cooperation with Laos during the coming period are twofold.
Firstly to strengthen Laos capacity to reduce poverty on a long-term and environmentally sustainable basis, and secondly to promote and strengthen conditions for democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The total Swedish support for Laos during the three-year period 2004-2006 is expected to be worth SEK 450 million.
