Sweden signed an agreement to continue development cooperation with Laos.
The agreement, which covers the period from July 2004 to December 2006, is based on the Government’s decision of 15 April 2004 on a new Swedish country strategy for development cooperation with Laos PDR. The agreement was signed on behalf of Sweden by Ambassador Jan Axel Nordlander in early June.
The objectives of the Swedish development cooperation with Laos are to strengthen Laos’s capacity to reduce poverty on a long term and environmentally sustainable basis as well as to promote and strengthen conditions for democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The total Swedish support for Laos during the three year period of 2004-2006 is estimated to account for SEK 450 million.
