China and Finland to increase Arctic research coorporation

China and Finland has signed an agreement to enhance and coorporate on Arctic research. The countries will establish a joint research center for Arctic space observation and data sharing services, according to Xinhua Net.

The agreement was signed on April 8 by Liu Jianbo, deputy director of the academy’s Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, and Jouni Pulliainen, director of Space and Earth Observation Center under the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The center will enhance cooperation on cryosphere research with satellites, which will provide information from the Arctic region for use in climate research, environmental monitoring, and operational activities, such as navigation in the Arctic Ocean.

China’s first overseas station was constructed in Sweden in 2016, the China Remote Sensing Satellite North Polar Ground Station (CNPGS). On that occasion Liu Jianbo said that “as China’s first overseas land satellite receiving station, the CNPGS has increased the transmission efficiency of satellite data, and improved China’s capability to access remote sensing data in the Arctic region.”

The research center will be build in Sodankyla located in north Finland’s Lapland.
