Big turnout for Nordic Day 2025 in Bangkok

The Nordic embassies in Bangkok jointly celebrated Nordic Day 2025 on February 13, with a grand reception at the Norwegian Ambassador’s residence. The event brought together over 400 guests, including senior Thai officials, diplomats, business leaders, and representatives of Nordic institutions in Thailand, to commemorate the unity, shared values, and strong diplomatic ties between Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

The Nordic Day is an excellent replacement for all the various national day celebrations by each of the Nordic nations which was previously held separately.

Nordic unity and global challenges
The evening’s program featured speeches from the four Nordic ambassadors: H.E. Ambassador Astrid Emilie Helle of Norway, H.E. Ambassador Danny Annan of Denmark, H.E. Ambassador Kristiina Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos of Finland, and H.E. Ambassador Anna Hammargren of Sweden. Each ambassador reflected on the enduring Nordic cooperation and its relevance in addressing current global challenges, including climate change, gender equality, and international security.

Norwegian Ambassador Astrid Emilie Helle, as host of the evening, emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that the Nordic countries’ shared commitment to sustainability and innovation serves as a guiding principle in their partnerships with Thailand and the broader ASEAN region.

Thai-Nordic cooperation and economic growth
H.E. Dr. Lalivan Karnchanachari, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, delivered a keynote address highlighting the growing economic ties between Thailand and the Nordic countries. She specifically mentioned the Free Trade Agreement negotiations between Thailand and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states, which are expected to boost bilateral trade and investment.

“The Nordic countries are valuable partners for Thailand, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, technology, and sustainable development,” Dr. Lalivan said.

“We look forward to deepening these ties for mutual prosperity.”

Sustainability and cultural exchange
The event underscored the Nordic countries’ shared focus on sustainability, with several speeches referencing the urgent need for a green transition and innovative solutions to global environmental challenges. The reception was not just an opportunity to highlight diplomatic and economic partnerships but also a celebration of the region’s cultural heritage.

Guests were treated to traditional Nordic music and dance performances, providing a glimpse into the rich and diverse cultures of the four countries. The Nordic embassies also showcased initiatives aimed at fostering cultural exchange and enhancing people-to-people connections between Thailand and the Nordic region.

A shared vision for the future
Nordic Day 2025 concluded with a call for continued cooperation in addressing global challenges and fostering sustainable growth. The ambassadors collectively expressed their appreciation for Thailand’s warm hospitality and reiterated their commitment to strengthening the Nordic presence and engagement in the region.

The event, covered on social media by the Thai-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, marked a significant occasion in the diplomatic calendar, reaffirming the strong and enduring ties between the Nordic countries and Thailand. The photos below are from the post of the Thai-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce.
