Laos is under pressure after a series of incidents involving foreign tourists, and authorities are now moving to tighten safety rules across the tourism sector, according to Travel and Tour World.

Now rules are tightening

The government is now stepping in as authorities have been instructed to introduce stricter inspections, clearer safety rules and stronger monitoring of tourism businesses.

The measures will target high-risk activities such as balloon rides and other adventure tourism experiences.

Officials admit safety rules have not kept pace with the growth in tourism, leaving gaps in oversight. Now, the government wants clearer rules, stricter licensing and better monitoring.

Plans also include the introduction of real-time alert systems, improved coordination between authorities and tourism operators, and multilingual support for tourists in emergency situations.

The goal is now to restore trust among international visitors.

Deaths and incidents raised alarm

The push comes after several high-profile incidents.

In 2024, six foreign tourists – including two Danish women – died in Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng after suspected methanol poisoning, a case that drew global attention and raised serious questions about safety standards.

The incident shook confidence in Laos as a travel destination.

More recently, a hot air balloon carrying tourists collided with power lines during a sunset flight.

While no injuries were reported, the footage spread quickly online and highlighted risks in so-called high-risk tourism activities.
