Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide has entered into a partnership with Danish car-sharing operator GreenMobility to introduce driverless mobility services in Denmark.
The companies aim to launch a public service during the first half of 2027, according to a joint announcement. The launch remains subject to approval from the Danish authorities.
The partnership represents WeRide’s first entry into the Nordic market and would make Denmark the sixth European country in which the Chinese company operates.
Under the plans, passengers will be able to request rides in WeRide’s GXR, a fully autonomous vehicle designed to comply with European Union requirements.
The vehicle uses Level 4 autonomous driving technology. This means it can perform all driving tasks without assistance from a driver, but only within defined geographical areas and under specified conditions.
GreenMobility will contribute its experience from operating shared electric vehicles in Denmark, while WeRide will provide the autonomous driving technology.
“This partnership marks WeRide’s first entry into the Nordic region,” said WeRide founder and CEO Tony Han.
GreenMobility CEO Kasper Gjedsted said the cooperation would allow the Danish company to bring its experience from millions of shared car journeys into autonomous mobility.
The project will be developed in cooperation with the Danish Road Directorate and the Danish Road Traffic Authority. Danish rules currently require special permission for Level 4 autonomous vehicles to operate on public roads. A human driver or remote operator must also be available to intervene after the vehicle has made a safe stop, according to the Danish Road Traffic Authority.
The companies have not yet disclosed where in Denmark the service will operate, how many vehicles it will include or whether the rides will initially form part of a limited trial.
WeRide says its autonomous driving technology is currently deployed in more than 40 cities across 12 countries. Its global Level 4 fleet consists of more than 3,000 vehicles.
GreenMobility operates more than 1,500 shared electric cars and vans in Copenhagen and Aarhus. Further details about the planned Danish service are expected in the coming months.
