Thai authorities arrested a young couple smuggling 24 Myanmar immigrants in a 22-wheel truck in Mae Sot district, Tak province. The pair, identified as Surapich, 23, and Waraporn, 21, confessed to picking up the group near the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge on January 4.
The arrest occurred during a routine checkpoint inspection at Huai Ya U, where officials discovered the immigrants hidden in the truck’s trailer. The couple admitted this was their second smuggling attempt, promising a payment of 3,000 baht (US$90) per person for delivering the group to Kamphaeng Phet province.
The immigrants had traveled from Myawaddy, Myanmar, and were intercepted en route to central Thailand. Officials warned of the health risks associated with illegal migration, citing a recent cholera outbreak.
The suspects and immigrants were transferred to Phawo Police Station for legal action.
