Danish badminton comet withdraws from Indonesia Open because of sickness

Three duels – that was all the Danish badminton comet Viktor Axelsen had in him when he faced the 8th seeded Boonsak Ponsana from Thailand at Indonesia Open in Jakarta.

The 19-year-old Dane faced the Thai singles player yesterday in Jakarta, but have to give up early on in the match because of sickness.

“Because of sickness I couldn’t play this morning. It’s a shame because I have been feeling fine in the days leading up to the tournament I had really been looking forward to playing here at Indonesia Open,” Axelsen writes on Twitter.

All in all Indonesia Open in Jakarta, which is one of the biggest badminton tournaments, turned out to be a horrible affair for the Danes who had surprising losses in the first rounds of the tournament.

Biggest upset was Olympic silver medalists Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe who were beaten in two sets to a Russian pair.

So far the only players left in Jakarta are Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen in the mixed doubles.
