This December 26 marks the 20th anniversary of the devastating tsunami that struck countries along the Indian Ocean, claiming over 226,000 lives. Among the victims were 46 Danish citizens, with 44 losing their lives in Thailand.

In remembrance of this tragedy, the Danish Embassy in Bangkok announced that Thai authorities will hold a memorial ceremony in Phang Nga Province, one of the hardest-hit areas. The event will occur over two days, featuring notable attendees such as the Thai Minister of Interior and representatives from the Danish Embassy.

“Phang Nga experienced significant destruction,” noted a spokesperson from the embassy. The ceremony aims to honor those who perished and support the families affected by the disaster.

Around 2,000 Danes found themselves in the tsunami-stricken areas, experiencing the catastrophe firsthand. Some lost children, parents, or spouses, while others miraculously reunited after the waters separated them.

Emergency pastor rushed to Thailand

Emergency pastor Susanne Steensgaard, who traveled to Thailand immediately after the tsunami, shared that the anniversary will evoke strong memories for many. “Such a traumatic experience stays with you for life. Many can still describe what happened minute by minute,” she said.

While past anniversaries featured chaos and deep sorrow, Steensgaard believes that this year’s commemoration may carry a more bittersweet tone. “The memories may resurface, but many have reclaimed their lives. Those who were children back then have become parents themselves, and some who lost partners have found new relationships and even grandchildren,” she added.

The tsunami claimed the lives of over 8,000 people in Thailand alone, including around 2,500 foreign tourists. Representatives from the Swedish and Norwegian embassies also plan to attend the memorial, reflecting the shared grief and solidarity across nations.
