Denmark and Cambodia have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation through more regular consultations, following their first bilateral talks in Phnom Penh on 30 October.

The discussions resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, establishing a framework for continued dialogue and cooperation.

The agreement was signed by Nong Sakal, Under Secretary of State at Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Christian Tobias Bayer Tygesen, Director of the Department for Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean at Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Cambodia’s foreign ministry, the consultations covered political, economic and social developments, as well as opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, education, healthcare, tourism and culture.

Cooperation in energy and agriculture
Both countries identified several areas with potential for closer cooperation, including energy, agriculture, agro-processing and water resources management.

The discussions also focused on opportunities to increase trade and investment flows and strengthen business connections between the two countries.

The Cambodian side said the next round of bilateral consultations would take place in Denmark, although no date has been announced.

The two countries will mark the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027.

Beyond their bilateral relationship, the discussions also addressed cooperation between ASEAN and Denmark, as well as relations between Cambodia and the European Union.

The Danish representative also acknowledged Cambodia’s socio-economic development and its ambition to graduate from Least Developed Country status by 2029.
