Maersk shuts container factory in China

The demand for reefers – refrigerated containers – is increasing and Maersk will shifts its focus to this market.

Maersk, the Danish world’s biggest container shipper will shut a transport container factory in China. The company’s Dongguan container factory, which has 2,240 employees and can produce 100,000 40-foot containers a year, has been idle since the beginning of December, Maersk said.

Instead Maersk will focus on producing refrigerated containers for food. As a result of higher global demand for fresh produce and other commodities, demand for refrigerated containers has increased, according to a Maersk’s statement on Thursday, 3 January 2019.
