Norwegian literature and folklore took centre stage at the Manila International Book Fair, where illustrator and author Malin Falch presented her fantasy graphic novel series Nordlys.

The event also marked the first public engagement in the Philippines by Norway’s new ambassador, Kristian Netland, according to the Manila Bulletin.

Falch’s Nordlys, known internationally as Northern Lights, draws inspiration from Norwegian folklore and mythology. The series combines fantasy storytelling with Nordic landscapes and supernatural elements, introducing international readers to stories rooted in Norway’s cultural traditions.

The series has reportedly sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide, reflecting the growing international audience for illustrated fantasy literature from the Nordic region.

The appearance forms part of Norway’s cultural engagement in the Philippines, where literary events provide opportunities to introduce Norwegian authors and stories to local audiences.

For Norway, cultural diplomacy offers a way to build connections beyond traditional political and economic relations. Literature and storytelling can also introduce younger readers to Nordic culture and mythology.

The book fair appearance comes as Norway continues to maintain diplomatic and cultural ties with the Philippines through its embassy in Manila.
