Two foreign nationals have reportedly disappeared in Cambodia after meeting with Vietnamese activists in Phnom Penh.
A Norwegian-Vietnamese human rights activist and an Australian-Vietnamese activist have been missing in Cambodia since September 18 after travelling to Phnom Penh to meet Vietnamese human rights activists, according to Cambodian outlet Kiripost.
The missing men are 52-year-old Nguyen Duc Thuan, a Norwegian national who lives in Oslo, and 51-year-old Tran Hiep, an Australian national based in Melbourne. Both are members of Viet Tan, a pro-democracy organisation advocating political and human rights reform in Vietnam.
According to their families and Viet Tan, Thuan and Hiep arrived in Phnom Penh from Bangkok on September 15 and were due to return on September 19 on Cambodia Airways flight KR701. Their last known communication was on the morning of September 18, and they never boarded their scheduled flight. Their families and colleagues say they have received no information about their whereabouts since.
The families say they have been in contact with the Norwegian and Australian foreign ministries and diplomatic missions in Phnom Penh and Bangkok. They have also appealed to the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to help establish the whereabouts of the two men.
