Singapore and Norway have launched a joint research grant aimed at developing technologies and solutions to reduce emissions from international shipping.
The initiative brings together Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), with funding of up to SGD 2.7 million from Singapore and NOK 20 million from Norway.
The funding will support research partnerships between institutions and industry partners in both countries, with selected projects eligible to receive support for up to four years.
The grant will focus on three areas: alternative fuels and energy infrastructure, vessel energy efficiency and emissions reduction, and digitalisation for greener shipping operations.
By requiring cooperation between research institutions and industry partners in both countries, the initiative aims to ensure that the research can be translated into practical applications for the maritime sector.
The latest funding call marks the third round of joint Singapore-Norway maritime research grants. Previous rounds took place in 2015 and 2018, supporting four projects covering maritime energy efficiency, emissions reduction and emerging technologies.
The cooperation builds on the maritime ties between Norway, which has a significant maritime industry and expertise in green shipping technologies, and Singapore, one of the world’s leading shipping and port hubs.
