Sweden is funding a study to explore the construction of a new bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Metro Iloilo, Philippines.

On October 29, Swedish Ambassador Harald Fries and Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon signed the agreement while Mayor Jerry Treñas is on medical leave. Officials from Sweden’s embassy and Business Sweden also witnessed the signing.

This agreement follows a proposal made by Business Sweden to the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) a year ago. This council comprises local governments and businesses in the region.

Ambassador Fries expressed pride in supporting Iloilo’s ambition for improved public transportation:

“We want to provide new solutions that enhance mobility and the quality of life for residents.”

Swedfund International, Sweden’s development finance group, is funding the study. If approved, the BRT will complement the mini-bus service launched in June 2022 as part of the Public Transportation Modernization Program.
