Thailand wishes to continue adoption cooperation with Denmark

Thailand has expressed its desire to continue cooperation on adoptions to Denmark, alongside the Czech Republic and India. The Danish Authority for Adoption (Ankestyrelsen) has taken over ongoing adoption cases from the Danish International Adoptions (DIA) agency, which recently closed its operations.

Since November 1, Ankestyrelsen has been actively managing existing adoption cases previously handled by DIA. The authority has received confirmation from central authorities in Thailand, as well as in the Czech Republic and India, that they wish to maintain their partnership with Denmark through Ankestyrelsen.

Ankestyrelsen has assured these countries that the collaboration will proceed. In a status update on the transition of DIA’s responsibilities, the agency mentioned that it has contacted all families with active international adoption cases, offering individual consultations and guidance regarding their specific adoption applications. So far, 16 families have accepted this offer.

Currently, new applicants cannot join a waiting list for international adoption because Ankestyrelsen can only finalize DIA’s ongoing cases. Meanwhile, approximately 500 adopted individuals in Denmark await access to information regarding their adoption cases. Ankestyrelsen will prioritize the oldest requests for information.

The authority assumed responsibilities after Denmark’s only adoption agency, DIA, closed its operations following the suspension of international adoptions earlier this year. This suspension resulted from media reports highlighting illegal practices and documentation issues.

Once DIA transfers its archives to the National Archives of Denmark (Rigsarkivet), Ankestyrelsen will access these cases.

The agency has established a task force to handle incoming inquiries regarding adoptions promptly.

For any new requests for information, individuals must also contact Ankestyrelsen directly.
