Norway sponsores Child report on Laos

Dr Bengt Ageros, Regional Representative of Save the Children Norway on October 4 signed an agreement with the Lao National Commission for Mothers and Children to provide financial and technical support for preparing the Second National Report on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, CRC.
The signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding took place at NCMC Secretariat Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 4 October 2002. Dr Bengt Agerossigned the agreement together with Mr. Kobkeo Luangkhot, Deputy Director of International Organization Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director of NCMC Secretariat. Also attending the signing ceremony were staff members from both parties.

The aim of the support is to provide financial and technical assistance for NCMC in order to write the Second National Report on the UNCRC. The Report will be based on CRC information gathered from different Ministries and provinces in Laos. A Lao national consultant together with an outside CRC expert will compile the Report. The writing process has started since September 2002. Once the Report is approved by the Lao Government, it will be sent to the CRC Committee in Geneva in 2003.

The UNCRC support is not the first that SCN in Laos gives a helping hand, Save the Children Norway has supported and is actively involved in creating CRC awareness among the Lao Government bodies as well as the Lao people. SCN also provides financial and technical assistance to Basic Education and Preventive of Economic Exploitation of Children.
