Danida Awarded Medal for Contribution to Development of the Vietnamese Fisheries Sector

Danida represented by Danish Ambassador Peter Lysholt Hansen, Programme Officer Nguyen Phuong Lien and Danida advisors Michael Akester, Donald Griffiths and Vincent Martino were awarded commemorative medals by Vice Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam for outstanding support to the development of the fisheries sector.
The Danish supported fisheries sector programme (FSPSII) is distinguished by its focus on and efforts to promote national and local ownership. The Vietnamese state and provincial authorities are themselves in charge of the implementation of the fisheries sector programme, which is based on Vietnamese strategies for poverty reduction and socio-economic development.
Ownership and responsibility for own development objectives are of high priority in the Danish funded Fisheries Sector Programme. Partly due to Danish support, the Vietnamese fisheries sector has gained access to international markets thereby increasing export revenues and contributing to overall economic growth in Vietnam. Furthermore the programme is focusing on improving income earnings from fisheries in the poorest areas and among small-scale fishermen, in order to improve the living conditions for the poorest segments of the Vietnamese population.
Over the last decade the Vietnamese fisheries sector has developed into one of the leading in the world and annual exports is increasing with remarkable speed.
