Taksin’s Finland Conspiracy

Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Taksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by a military coup in 2006, is in Thailand widely believed to have created a plan to turn Thailand into a republic during a visit to Finland probably in 1999. But Lars Backstrom, Ambassador of Finland to Bangkok, says he personally asked Taksin in 2006 if this was true and Taksin had at that point denied the existence of any such plan.
“He said that he had visited Lapland, but that no such discussions [on a Finland plan] had taken place”, Backström says in an article published in Helsingin Sanomat on 21 December 2008
However, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, HE Kasit Piromya spoke in a meeting in the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand on 30 September 2008 about the Finland plan as a genuine fact metioning details of the plan and that it was drawn up with the participation of republicans in the inner circles of Taksin’s then ruling party Thai Rak Thai.
