Swedish literature week in Vietnam

A week of celebrating Swedish literature in Vietnam has opened at the East-West Culture and Language Centre in Hanoi on May 18, with the debut a selected collection of Swedish poems in the Vietnamese language.

The event is being held as part of a project called “Assisting Vietnamese culture for sustainable development between 2005-2009”, funded by the Swedish Government. A group of Swedish writers are also visiting Vietnam for the week.

Seven poets, translators and the director of the Tranan Publishing House will meet with Vietnamese colleagues and Hanoian students to exchange views on literature and the peoples of Vietnam and Sweden.

Seminars will be held for literature and culture students in Hanoi, the central city of Vinh and central Ha Tinh province.

According to Tranan Director Styrbjørn Gustafsson, the publishing house has so far translated 8 Vietnamese literature works into Swedish and those works have been highly praised by Swedish readers.

The publishing house also plans to publish a collection of Vietnamese poems in Sweden in the near future.
