Money issues force Denmark to close its embassies in Jordan, Algeria, Bosnia and Nicaragua. Plus the consulate in Hong Kong. At the same time Denmark gets a new embassy in the United Arab Emirates, reports fyens.dk.
General money issues, combined with rising costs to terror security of Danish embassies is the reason for closures. But also considerations of Denmark’s overall political, economic and security interests are part of the decision.
“We have looked at how we can make the most of our representations abroad. So it’s not just that we need better balance budgets. It is because among other things, that we have increased spending on security at the embassies in several countries. At the same time we have opened new embassies in Latin America, Australia and the Middle East, so we knew we had to find money elsewhere,” says the Danish Foreign Minister, Lene Espersen (K).
