Indonesia: Peterporn Investigators Arrest Eight

Indonesian Police have laid charges against eight people accused of uploading the Peterporn sex tapes on the Internet.

Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi, National Police chief of detectives, said the suspects were from Jakarta, West Java and other parts of the island.

Ito would not name the suspects and it is unclear whether those arrested are those who first published the graphic movies on the Internet.

Police, in a slow-moving investigation, have previously said they had detained two people for uploading the videos but said they were not major players.

“We are still searching for the missing link. How did the suspects get hold of the tapes? What was the process? That’s what we’re still investigating,” Ito said.

Investigators have questioned more than 20 witnesses since the videos, allegedly featuring Peterpan frontman Nazril “Ariel” Irham, his girlfriend, actress Luna Maya, and Cut Tari, were first broadcast early last month.

Ariel’s ex-wife Sarah Amalia has also been questioned.

Police had suspected that the tapes were leaked to public by people related to Ariel — who has also been named a suspect — but so far police had not found any indications to support their suspicions.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Edward Aritonang, meanwhile, said Luna and Cut Tari were yet to be named suspects because of the conflicting opinions of various legal experts.

“We have to have a firm legal platform because it is important when the case makes it to court.”
