The Danish National Performance Team Visits China

As part of the Danish National Performance Team’s tour in China the team visited the Danish Embassy and did a small performance.

Saturday March the 5th the Danish National Performance Team (DNPT) was welcomed to China by the Danish Ambassador to China, Friis Arne Petersen, at the Embassy in Beijing.

”The Danish National Performance Team’s visit to China is a great opportunity to introduce China to European and Danish youth culture. The members of the team act as ambassadors for the Danish tradition of gymnastics and sports associations,” Friis Arne Petersen said.

After the Ambassador had welcomed the team to China they did a brief performance, where the team showed some of the routines from their extensive repertoire.

Present at the event was Mr. Shang Duyuan, Deputy Director of International Department of the All China Youth Federation and Xiao Qin, gold winning gymnast from Beijing Olympics and now preparing for the London Olympics.

The following week the DNPT will perform shows in both Tianjin and Beijing. In Tianjin the team will perform together with athletes from the Pang Gu Wen Wu Kung Fu School, and on March the 12th DNPT will perform at Nova Arts Center in Beijing.

The DNPT’s visit in China is a part of the EU-China Year of Youth in 2011. Throughout the year a line of events will take place in both China and Europe to celebrate and exchange Chinese and European youth culture.

The olympic gold medalist in gymnastics, Xiao Qin, attended the event at the Danish Embassy.

The DNPT represents the Danish tradition of youth gymnastics and youth associations. They are not professional gymnasts, but even though they practice in their spare time, they are among the best gymnasts in the country. They perform traditional Danish gymnastics inspired by current dance trends combined with artistic acrobatics.

The tradition of young Danish gymnasts touring the world goes all the way back to the 1930s where Danish folk high schools pioneered in bringing Danish gymnasts around the world to perform gymnastics and learn about foreign cultures.

This is the fourth time that the DNPT visits China since 2000. The 2010/11 tour takes the team to the following countries: USA, Australia, Singapore, Japan and China. After leaving China the team will do a series of performances in Europe.
