Celebrations and scholarships in Yunnan

Students from different nationalities received scholarships from King Harald V’s Scholarship Programme on 24 September 2011 as Yunnan University of Nationalities celebrates its 60th anniversary.

On 22 September, Minister Counsellor Rune Jensen signed a new three year agreement for the King Harald V’s Scholarship Programme with Yunnan University of Nationalities (YUN) on behalf of Ambassador Svein O. Sæther.  President Zhang Yingjie signed for the University. King Harald V and Queen Sonja visited the University in 1997, and the scholarships have been awarded since 1998. This year, 10 students of different ethnic groups in China received the scholarships in a ceremony on 24 September.

The new three year agreement ensures that the scholarship will be awarded annually in the period 2012-2014. Each year, 12 students belonging to China’s ethnic minorities will receive the scholarship. The students are studying for their masters’ degrees, and their degrees focus on minority or nationalities studies. Mr. Jensen also participated at the 60th anniversary celebrations of YUN in Kunming on 23 September.
