King Carl XVI Gustaf has honoured Thailand’s outgoing ambassador to Sweden, Arunrung Phothong Humphreys.

The King gave her the Royal Order of the Polar Star during a farewell audience on 10 September. The meeting took place as Humphreys prepares to end her diplomatic posting in Stockholm.

The Royal Thai Embassy announced the honour on 16 September. It said the order recognised her work to strengthen relations between Thailand and Sweden.

Humphreys began her posting in Sweden in 2023. She presented her credentials to King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on 28 March that year.

During the ceremony, a state coach carried Humphreys and her group from Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs to the palace. A military band and guards of honour welcomed the group upon arrival.

Humphreys has since represented Thailand in political, business and cultural exchanges with Sweden. Her work has included meetings with Swedish companies and activities involving the Thai community.

Thailand and Sweden have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 150 years.

The embassy has not yet named Humphreys’ successor. It has also not confirmed her formal departure date.
