Badminton star Kunlavut leads Thai challenge at Denmark Open in Odense

Kunlavut Vitidsarn will fight in the Denmark Open as Asian Games champion and world No. 1, adding the Asian Games gold to the Olympic silver medal he won in Paris in 2024.

Thai badminton fans in Denmark will have a rare opportunity to cheer for Thai badminton superstar Kunlavut “View” Vitidsarn and other top Thai players when the VICTOR Denmark Open 2026 takes place in Odense from 13–18 October.

On Tuesday, 6 October, the draw will take place, deciding who Kunlavut will face in his first match and mapping out his potential route through the later rounds.

The tournament at SJF Bank Arena is one of the major stops on the international badminton calendar. The Denmark Open is a BWF World Tour Super 750 event with total prize money of USD 950,000 and describes itself as the second-oldest international badminton tournament in the world.

For Thai supporters, much of the attention will be on Kunlavut, who arrives in Denmark as the world No. 1 in men’s singles and fresh from making Thai sporting history at the Asian Games in Japan.

On 29 September, the 25-year-old defeated Singapore’s former world champion Loh Kean Yew 21–12, 21–16 in the final in Nagoya, becoming the first Thai player ever to win the Asian Games men’s singles badminton title. Thailand’s previous best result in the event was a bronze medal won by Sangob Rattanusorn in 1970.

Kunlavut also returned to the top of the BWF world rankings at the end of September, adding another reason for Thai fans in Denmark to follow his appearance in Odense. His Asian Games gold comes just over two years after he won the men’s singles silver medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

The Denmark Open begins with first-round matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, 13–14 October. The second round follows on Thursday, quarter-finals on Friday and semi-finals on Saturday, with the finals scheduled for Sunday, 18 October.

The organisers are encouraging spectators to get close to the action at SJF Bank Arena, where the seating is positioned close to the courts. Individual adult tickets currently start at DKK 220 for the opening rounds, rising to DKK 335 for finals day.

For the Thai community in Denmark, the tournament offers a chance to welcome Kunlavut and Thailand’s other badminton players only two weeks after a historic Asian Games for Thai badminton.
