On 9 August 2016, Ekokem in Kumla was visited by a group of Chinese scientists from Tongji University in Shanghai. They are involved in a project that looks at chemical pollution and environmental quality, collaborating with Stockholm University in Sweden.

The trip to Sweden, where the visit to Ekokem was included, was about finding solutions for hazardous waste that must be disposed of in China. The researchers wanted to get more information and answers to questions about how Ekokem take care of hazardous waste and how they treat different types of chemicals that they receive. They also talked about the circular economy and recycling.

Coordinator of the trip was Åke Bergman, Professor of Environmental Chemistry at Stockholm University and head of the Swedish center for toxicological sciences, and Anders Bignert, a professor at Stockholm University.
