Norway has pledged $1.2 million to support Cambodia’s mine clearance and victim assistance programs from 2025 to 2027, reaffirming more than three decades of cooperation between the two countries, Khmer Times reports.
The announcement was made during a meeting in Phnom Penh on October 6 between Norwegian Ambassador to Cambodia Astrid Emilie Helle and Senior Minister Ly Thuch, first vice president of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA).
Ly Thuch thanked Norway for its continued support, describing the Nordic nation as both a key donor and a long-standing partner in Cambodia’s efforts to eliminate landmines and explosive remnants of war. He highlighted Norway’s contributions in mine clearance, data management, capacity building, and research, as well as its support during the Siem Reap–Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World in 2024.
Ambassador Helle commended Cambodia’s leadership in mine action and confirmed Norway’s commitment to assisting the country in reaching its goal of becoming mine-free. She also expressed hope for continued peace along the Cambodia–Thailand border, where past clashes have displaced families and claimed lives.
The new funding underscores Norway’s ongoing role as one of Cambodia’s most active international partners in the mine action sector, supporting national development and humanitarian goals through demining initiatives.
