How to vote in the Danish general election from Southeast Asia

Denmark will hold a general election on Tuesday, 24 March 2026. Danish citizens staying abroad can cast their vote in advance at Danish embassies and consulates across Asia.

Voters are encouraged to cast their ballot as early as possible to ensure it reaches their home municipality in Denmark before election day.

Who can vote?

You can vote in the parliamentary election if you:

  • Are a Danish citizen
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have permanent residence in the Kingdom of Denmark
  • Are not under full legal guardianship

Danes living abroad must in many cases apply to be registered on the parliamentary electoral roll (folketingsvalglisten) through their last municipality of residence in Denmark.

Thailand and Cambodia

At the Danish Embassy in Bangkok, advance voting is available without prior appointment: Monday–Friday 09:00–12:00 and again 13:00–16:00

The embassy recommends voting no later than 9 March 2026 to ensure timely delivery.

In Phnom Penh, voting is possible at the Danish honorary consulate by prior appointment only.

Vietnam

In Vietnam, voters can cast their ballot at The Danish Embassy in Hanoi (deadline: 10 March at 12:00 noon) and at The Danish Trade Office in Ho Chi Minh City (deadline: 6 March at 12:00 noon)

No prior appointment is required.

Indonesia

At the embassy in Jakarta, voters are advised to cast their ballot no later than 9 March.

At honorary consulates in Medan, Surabaya, Bali and Port Moresby, the recommended deadline is 6 March.

On Bali, voting without appointment is possible on Friday, 6 March, from 10:00–12:00.

Malaysia

At the Danish Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, voting takes place Monday–Thursday from 10:00–12:00.

Prior appointment via email is required.

China and Hong Kong

In China, Danish citizens can vote at Danish representations by prior arrangement.

In Hong Kong, advance voting is available at the Danish Seamen’s Church by appointment.

Remember identification Voters must bring valid photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s licence.

General information for voters in countries not listed

If you are staying in a country where the Danish embassy has not published specific information about advance voting, you can still cast your ballot abroad.

Danish citizens may vote at any Danish embassy or consulate in the country where they are residing or travelling.

It is recommended to contact the relevant representation in advance to confirm opening hours and whether an appointment is required.

There is no formal final deadline for casting your vote abroad, but your ballot must reach your home municipality in Denmark before voting begins on election day in order to be counted.

Voters must bring valid photo identification, such as a passport or driver’s licence.

Important deadlines

There is no formal final deadline for voting abroad. However, ballots must reach the relevant municipality in Denmark before voting begins on election day.

Votes cast after the recommended deadlines will still be forwarded but cannot be guaranteed to arrive in time.
