Norway’s King Haakon VIII took the oath of allegiance to the Constitution before the Norwegian Parliament on 1 September 2026.
The ceremony marked one of the most important constitutional acts following his accession to the throne after the death of King Harald V on 28 August.
The royal transition was also highlighted in Southeast Asia. The Norwegian Embassy in Hanoi shared a bilingual Vietnamese-English account of the ceremony, describing it as an affirmation of Norway’s constitutional monarchy and the bond between the King and the country’s elected representatives.
During the ceremony, Masud Gharahkhani, president of the Norwegian Parliament, formally announced King Harald’s death and Haakon’s succession.
King Haakon pledged to govern Norway in accordance with its Constitution and laws. In a short address, he said that he and Queen Mette-Marit were ready to serve Norway and its people.
He also adopted the royal motto “We give our all for Norway,” continuing a tradition followed by King Harald V and earlier Norwegian monarchs.
Gharahkhani paid tribute to the late King Harald before welcoming the new King and Queen to their roles.
Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra accompanied King Haakon, while Queen Sonja and Prince Sverre Magnus also attended the ceremony.
