Mika Salo says Bangkok injury was an accident, not an attack

Former Finnish Formula 1 driver Mika Salo said his recent injury in Bangkok was an accident, not a random knife attack.

Former Finnish Formula 1 driver Mika Salo has said his recent injury in Bangkok was an accident and not a random knife attack, following widespread international media coverage of the incident.

As previously reported by local media and ScandAsia, early reports claimed the former Ferrari driver had been attacked with a sharp object while visiting the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok on 19 May.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, Salo said he suddenly realised he was injured and described the event as an accident. He also thanked Thai police for their close support and assistance following the incident.

Salo said he travelled to Thailand because he enjoys the country’s weather and wanted to relax and recover physically. He added that he still feels warmly welcomed in Thailand and plans to return again in the future.

The former Formula 1 driver also said he was surprised by the large police presence surrounding the case after seeing the international news coverage and wanted to clarify the facts of what happened.
