New Danish consortium with strong Singaporean ties will build new Artic patrol ships

A Danish consortium Danske Flådeskibe K/S is set to design and construct new Arctic patrol ships and future frigates for the Royal Danish Navy, with production centered in Esbjerg, Denmark. While these vessels will be built in Denmark, there is a notable connection to Singapore through design collaborations.

Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) has collaborated with Denmark’s Odense Maritime Technology (OMT) and Sweden’s Saab Kockums to design the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Multi-Role Combat Vessels (MRCVs). These MRCVs are based on a fusion of designs from Sweden and Denmark, incorporating elements from OMT’s Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates and Saab Kockums’ corvette designs. The MRCVs are being constructed locally in Singapore by ST Engineering Marine, with the first vessel’s steel cutting ceremony held in March 2024 and delivery expected in 2028.

While Denmark’s new frigates are going to be built domestically, the design expertise from Danish firms like OMT has significantly influenced Singapore’s naval shipbuilding projects, leading to the development of advanced vessels such as the MRCVs.
