Nine Thai students have been awarded scholarships to pursue studies in science and technology at leading Swedish universities.
The scholarships form part of the defence offset programme connected to Thailand’s purchase of Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets from Sweden.
The recipients will study at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Lund University and Linköping University, according to the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok.
The Royal Thai Air Force and Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation jointly announced the selected recipients.
ScandAsia has previously reported that the Gripen agreement includes a broad offset package covering technology transfer, industrial cooperation, research and education. Saab has described it as a long-term programme intended to generate investment and strengthen capabilities across several sectors of the Thai economy.
The Swedish Embassy said the scholarship initiative would help expand cooperation between Sweden and Thailand within education, innovation, science and technology.
