A 35-year-old Swedish man has been arrested in Chiang Mai for falsely claiming that he had been robbed. The Swede told the police that he had been approached by a gang of three men, one of whom had a knife, on Thursday 19 January 2017.

According to the Swede’s explanation, the gang had stolen his bag containing a laptop, mobile phone, money and a gold ring. But when the police checked the CCTV footage, they found nothing. That is why, on the next day, tourist police searched the man’s room where they found all of the supposedly stolen items.

Later, the 35-year-old has confessed that he lied about the robbery in order to get compensation from his insurance. He now remains in custody and is awaiting further legal proceedings.
