Sweden and the Philippines have signed a grant agreement to help develop national standards for buses used in public transport in the Philippines, according to Manila Bulletin.

The agreement involves the Swedish Embassy in the Philippines, Sweden’s development finance institution Swedfund, and the Philippine Department of Transportation.

The goal is to improve safety, quality, and accessibility in the bus system. It will focus on setting clear technical standards for urban buses, including how buses are classified and what performance requirements they must meet.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said to Manila Bulletin the project supports the government’s transport policy goals.

“President Marcos has made it clear that we must move away from a car-centric transport model toward a more inclusive, commuter-centric system. By improving our bus networks and public transport infrastructure, we can move more people efficiently, reduce travel time, and ease traffic congestion,” Lopez said.
