Taiwanese residents in Denmark staged a protest outside the Danish Parliament on Monday, opposing a new government policy that lists their nationality and birthplace as “China” instead of “Taiwan” on official documents. The change, in effect since at least March 2024, was revealed by Danish newspaper Berlingske.
The demonstration, organized by the NGO Taiwan Corner, saw protesters holding signs declaring, “We are from Taiwan, not China.” Danish lawmakers from the People’s Party and the Liberal Alliance raised concerns in parliament, questioning the policy’s implications.
Taiwan Corner’s chair, Michael Danielsen, criticized the move, arguing that forcing Taiwanese to register as Chinese aligns Denmark with Beijing’s stance and contradicts democratic principles. The group urged the government to reverse the decision, warning it undermines Taiwan’s international standing.
The protest highlights growing tensions over identity rights and Denmark’s diplomatic approach to Taiwan amid pressure from China.

[…] In Denmark, the Taiwan issue has also emerged at a civil-society level. Earlier this year, Taiwanese residents protested a decision to list their birthplace as “China” on official documents, demonstrating how identity, democratic values, and the cross-Strait conflict resonate beyond Asia. https://scandasia.com/taiwanese-protest-in-denmark-over-new-china-label-on-official-documents/ […]
