Swedish Source Of Inspiration

Recently the Embassy of Sweden and Transparency International -Malaysia jointly organised a two days workshop on “Freedom of Information and media’s role in improving governance transparency and accountability”. The event was supported by High Commission of Canada and Centre for Independent Journalism Malaysia.
    The event was officiated by the Ambassador of Sweden, HE Helena Sångeland, Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf Secretary – General, Ministry of Information Malaysia and Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, President of  Transparency International- Malaysia. Selected representatives  from relevant authorities, organisations and media were represented.  About 45 participants attended the two days workshop event.
    The aim of the workshop was to discuss how freedom of information can diminish corruption and contribute to a higher transparency within the public sector. Particular focus was aimed on media’s role . The workshop also offered the participants to discuss how a legislation on the freedom of information area should be developed.
    The Swedish way was used as a source of example and inspiration for discussion. Legislations, practical experiences and suggestions were brought up by the Swedish experts who participated at the event. The Swedish presentations lapped the Malaysian examples presented by the Malaysian experts. The local presentations illustrated the existing situation in Malaysia and lightened up the areas that should be more focused on.
    The workshop resulted in concrete suggestions on how freedom of information can be  implemented in Malaysia. The suggestions will be compiled by Transparency International –Malaysia. The participants agreed that the workshop gave an origin of important inspiration and ideas on how the developing work regarding this matter can continue.
