Norwegian Minister Visits Thailand and Myanmar


In Bangkok, he met with Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kasit Piromya, and discussed topical bilateral and regional issues, as well as global issues of common concern. In Naypyidaw, he met with representatives of the new government of Myanmar, including Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin.


In Yangon, he met with representatives of various political parties, as well as with Mr. Vijay Nambiar, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General. Mr. Eide also met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. This was the first meeting between her and a representative of the Norwegian government since she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.


The main purpose of the visit to Myanmar was to assess the political situation after the elections in 2010 and to promote a democratic development. During his visit, Mr. Eide announced that the Norwegian government has decided to lift its discouragement of travels to Myanmar.
