Chiang Mai has been ranked the most affordable city in the world for digital nomads living on a monthly budget of $2,000, according to a February 2026 report by Life in Armenia magazine.

The northern Thai city allows remote workers to spend less than $1,000 on rent and living costs, leaving an estimated $1,021 in disposable income — more than any other city surveyed. Bangkok ranked second, with average monthly costs of around $1,200 and significantly more coworking spaces than Chiang Mai.

Bangkok also made the list in second place, while Bali ranked fifth, meaning three Asian destinations appear in the global top five.

The study examined 28 global destinations, comparing rent, living expenses, internet prices and coworking costs. Asian cities dominated the list, with Bali and Seoul also placing in the top ten.

Thailand’s visa-free access for travellers from 112 countries and low mobile data costs — just $0.41 per gigabyte — were highlighted as key advantages.

According to the report, the average digital nomad spends around $3,200 per month while travelling.
