China will introduce revised rules for imported food from June 1, tightening oversight of overseas manufacturers, according to the General Administration of Customs.
The new regulations require foreign food producers to register with Chinese authorities under updated criteria, with approvals valid for five years. Registrations will be automatically renewed for another five years unless authorities decide otherwise.
Stricter rules for overseas food exporters
The rules apply to thousands of companies exporting food to China, including producers from Nordic countries. Norwegian salmon is among the food products exported to China under the existing system.
Chinese authorities said the changes aim to strengthen food safety controls while maintaining trade flows.
More than 96,000 overseas food companies are currently registered to export to China, reflecting the scale of the market.
