China’s Tencent bought 100% of Sweden’s Sharkmob AB

Tencent Holdings Ltd, China’s top video game publisher has acquired 100% of Sweden’s game developer Sharkmob AB, according to Sharkmob AB’s press release on May 21, 2019.

The total amount of the investment has not been disclosed by the authories from both sides.

CEO of Sharkmob Fredrik Rundqvist said that Sharkmob shares the same vision with Tencent toward the future of online gaming. Besides, Sharkmob is confident that the connections and skills Tencent has been obtaining as a leading internet and games platform through years can assist Sharkmob to successfully reach its mission in the future.

“Support from Tencent’s incredible group of game teams will allow us to fully pursue our passion of bringing great gaming experiences to as many players as possible,” he said.

The press release also announced that Sharkmob will continue working with its unannounced online game as well as several new projects together with Tencent.

Steven Ma, Senior Vice President of Tencent, commented “Sharkmob’s creative and passionate team has a proven track record of developing triple-A titles which involves open world setting and various gameplays.

“We look forward to more exciting innovation for game-lovers by combining Sharkmob’s development capabilities with Tencent’s technologies and expertise,” Ma said.

Founded in 1998 and based in Shenzhen, Tencent is China’s largest social media company which has holdings in several famous game developers accross the world such as 84.3% of Supercel, a Finnish mobile game company, and 40% of Epic Games, an American video game and software developer.
