Denmark’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Franz-Michael “Dan-Dan” Mellbin, joined members of the United Architects of the Philippines in celebrating World Architecture Day, focusing on this year’s theme, “Design for Strength.”
During the event, Ambassador Mellbin shared examples of Denmark’s innovative approaches to building resilient urban communities, including the development of sponge cities, communal swimming pools, and skate parks that double as water catch basins. These projects, he noted, combine “green and gray” infrastructure to manage flooding while providing functional and enjoyable public spaces.
The ambassador highlighted Copenhagen as a leading example, noting that the Danish capital — currently designated as the World Capital of Architecture by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects — embodies how design can serve both environmental and social purposes.
Amid ongoing climate challenges and frequent flooding in the Philippines, Ambassador Mellbin urged the need for solutions that extend beyond the celebrated “resilience of the Filipino spirit.” He emphasized shifting toward more pragmatic, people-centered, and innovative designs to address the country’s growing climate vulnerabilities.
The Danish Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with Filipino partners in promoting sustainable, resilient urban development and in building a more climate-secure future for the Philippines.
