Childhood experiences can cross languages and borders, and maybe Chinese and Danish children’s experiences aren’t as different as one would think.

This is evident as the Danish children’s animation ‘Lotte og Totte’ by writer and director Maja Fridthjof has won the prize for ‘Best animated Movie’ at Beijing International Children’s Film Festival 2026.

The animation follows Lotte, who is devastated by the family’s move into a new house. Deeply uprooted by the change, Lotte declares, that she never wants to make a friend again. This however changes, when she meets the next-door neighbor’s kid, Totte, and the two of them become best friends through shared adventures.

The animation is based on the beloved no. 1 bestselling scandinavian book series for preschool kids, and has become the most streamed children’s show on the Danish Broadcasting website DR.dk.

Following the award ceremony Mia Fridtjof has had several memorable exchanges with Chinese viewers, whom tells her that the show has evoked feelings from their own childhood even though the show is about danish children’s every day life.
“I t gives me hope for the future, because it shows that vi really aren’t that different as people. So we have to keep insisting on cultural exchange, also with countries that we perceive at very different to our own. It means more to me than winning a prize even though it helps.
