Several Danish citizens find themselves imprisoned in Asia for drug-related offenses, and among them is 55-year-old John, who serves over five years in a Thai prison for drug possession. John shares his story in a interview with DR.

Since authorities arrested him in early 2021, John has faced numerous challenges behind bars. He shares a cramped cell with about 60 other inmates, navigating the harsh realities of prison life. The constant noise from a TV blaring Thai soap operas keeps him on edge, compelling him to use earplugs nearly all day. “It feels like a lifetime. Every day is the same, and it ruins your life,” he reflected during a recent interview with the DR program Kriminelt.

Rising problem

The number of Danes imprisoned in Asia for drug-related offenses has increased, according to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs obtained by DR. Since March of this year, that number has more than doubled. The Ministry does not provide specific statistics for Danes imprisoned only in Thai facilities, as the figures are too small to avoid identifying individuals. However, from March until now, the number of Danish citizens incarcerated in Asia for drug offenses has risen from four to nine. Currently, a total of 15 Danes are imprisoned in various Asian jails.

John’s troubles began when police apprehended him for possessing a small amount of cannabis and over nine grams of methamphetamine. Initially, he received a harsh 28-year sentence, which later reduced to 14 years due to appeals, and eventually to five years and seven months after new laws. “I didn’t realize the risk was so high or that things could end so badly,” he shared.

Thailand’s strict drug laws have left John feeling increasingly isolated. After spending 1,414 days in prison, he expresses frustration over his inability to navigate the legal system and pursue a transfer to a Danish prison. However, he faces hurdles, including a hefty fine of 72,000 kroner imposed by Thai authorities as a condition for any potential transfer.

Warning for others

John deeply regrets his past decisions and urges others to think carefully before engaging in criminal activities abroad. “I want to warn people about what can happen. You really need to consider the consequences of your actions,” he advised.

As he endures this difficult chapter, John remains committed to raising awareness among fellow Danes about the serious risks associated with drug laws in foreign countries. DR News has sought comments from the Thai embassy in Denmark but has not received a response.
