On November 11, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the event titled “Justice for Thai Berry Pickers in Finland and Sweden” will take place at Tekstin Talo, Finland. Admission is free. This event aims to shed light on the long-standing issues that Thai berry pickers face in the Finnish berry industry. Since 2005, the Finnish berry sector has heavily depended on pickers from Thailand. However, the compensation for berry picking remains alarmingly low, making this work unattractive to locals and residents in neighboring regions.
In addition to low pay, serious deficiencies plague the working conditions for berry pickers. A Finnish berry entrepreneur has faced legal action for violations that undermine human dignity. Currently, human trafficking investigations are ongoing and may affect around 2,000 Thai berry pickers, as reported by the National Bureau of Investigation.
During the screening and discussion, attendees will watch the documentaries The Berries Blues (Isaan Record) and Missä marjat (Act4Dem). These films highlight nearly 20 years of ongoing challenges in this sector.
After the screenings, the panel discussion will feature activist Junya Yimprasert, researcher Minna Seikkula, and former berry pickers. Playwright Susi Siriya Orenius will facilitate the conversation, conducted in both English and Thai, with an interpreter present.
Ultimately, this event seeks to raise awareness and promote dialogue about the rights and treatment of Thai berry pickers in Finland and Sweden. Participants can expect insightful conversations about the realities faced by workers in this industry and how to instigate meaningful change.
