Finland and Indonesia deepen energy cooperation through new MoU

Finland and Indonesia have signed a new agreement to boost cooperation in clean energy, renewable technologies, and energy efficiency.

Finland and Indonesia have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation to strengthen collaboration in clean and renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable technologies. The agreement also aims to enhance market access for Finnish companies in Indonesia’s growing energy sector.

The MoU was signed in Helsinki on 6 October 2025 by Director General Riku Huttunen from Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and Secretary General Ahmad Erani Yustika from Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The signing took place during an official visit by an Indonesian business delegation to Finland.

During the visit, representatives from Business Finland and Finnish energy companies presented their technological solutions, while the Indonesian delegation introduced developments in their domestic energy sector. The visitors will also tour the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Eurajoki and several energy facilities in Vaasa, including Wärtsilä’s technology centre and the WestEnergy plant, which operates under circular economy principles.

The new agreement complements earlier energy cooperation frameworks between Finland and Indonesia, first established in 2015 and renewed in 2022. It covers a wide range of sectors, including renewable energy, energy storage, carbon capture, smart grids, waste-to-energy, hydrogen technologies, and electric vehicle infrastructure.

According to Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the MoU serves as a platform for Finnish expertise to contribute to Indonesia’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 or earlier.
