Finland and Vietnam are moving forward with plans for a new phase of cooperation on meteorological monitoring and forecasting, involving Finnish technology company Vaisala.
The proposed project would provide Vietnam with four weather radars, two LiDAR systems and an upgraded SmartMet weather forecasting and data management system, according to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
The project is being developed as part of wider Finnish-Vietnamese cooperation in meteorology and hydrology. The two sides are working to prepare the project for submission to Finnish authorities by May 2027, with concessional financing expected to be involved.
Vaisala has previously supplied technology to Vietnam’s meteorological sector, including weather sensors, radar systems, lightning detection equipment and forecasting software.
The cooperation is aimed at strengthening Vietnam’s ability to monitor severe weather and improve forecasting and early warning systems. This is particularly relevant as the country faces regular storms, flooding and other weather-related risks.
The latest discussions also covered training and technology transfer, with both sides highlighting the importance of developing Vietnam’s technical capacity alongside new equipment.
For Finland, the project provides another opportunity for its weather and climate technology expertise to be applied in Southeast Asia, while for Vietnam it could strengthen the country’s national meteorological infrastructure.
