Norwegian exports of fresh salmon and trout to Southeast Asia and Taiwan rose by 10 per cent in the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period last year.
A total of 53,569 tonnes were exported during the period, while the value of the exports increased by 13 percent.
Thailand and Vietnam are among Norway’s key seafood markets in Southeast Asia. Thailand is the region’s largest market for Norwegian seafood by value, while Vietnam ranks first by volume.
Norwegian salmon also holds a dominant position in both markets. Norway accounts for more than 60 per cent of the salmon market in Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.
The growth comes as Norwegian seafood exporters continue to target consumers in Southeast Asia through promotional campaigns with retailers and restaurants.
Vietnam could provide further opportunities for Norwegian salmon exporters. Vietnamese authorities are considering changes to animal quarantine rules that would remove a proposed testing requirement for salmonid alphavirus in imported salmonids.
If adopted, the change could simplify the import process for Norwegian salmon, although the final regulations have not yet been confirmed.
Southeast Asia has become an increasingly important destination for Norwegian seafood. In 2025, Norway exported seafood worth NOK 9 billion to the region, with salmon accounting for more than half of the total value.
The latest figures point to continued strong demand for Norwegian salmon across Southeast Asian markets.
